Atlas & Murphy's

Hi! My name is Atlas and I am the Woofmaster here at the Groovie Kennel. I took over for
Murphy, who founded this
website. She passed on in 2000 and the site was without a Woofmaster until I came along in the late spring of 2001.
The site needed (and still needs) some paint and hind-leg grease to get it looking new again due to the lack of
maintenance, but I'm rolling up my fur and getting things in shape. Here in the Kennel you'll find links to all kinds
of things canine that are out there on the web - from Humane Societies to
canine friends to
one of my favorite things, food. What
you won't find here is a place to stay - we're not THAT kind of Kennel!
As you can see, I am a Dalmatian - full-blood and proud of my heritage. However, since I can't read those scratches that humans put on those things they call paper, I don't have any papers to say that I am "registered". (I wouldn't want to be thought of as "registered male" anyway!) But even though I am not technically of the "mutt" persuasion, I plan to keep the site dedicated to web canines of all varieties as Murphy intended. Of course, I'll have to have many spots of Dalmatian here! (Get it? Spots ... Dalmatian. OK, so it's bad Dalmatian humor.)
Just to set the record straight, no, I haven't seen the Disney movie 101 Dalmatians, or even 102 Dalmatians. We're not like the dogs portrayed in those movies - we have more spunk and character than those canine actors. (Though it is true that we are very cute!) It's Hollywood - you can't expect things to be like real life. Take Lassie, the classic canine movie star - most of the time you were seeing a male canine actor folks! And please, you can't tell me that in real life there wouldn't be one time when she would have left Timmy down that well just to teach him a lesson!
You might be asking how I ended up here as the Woofmaster of the Groovie Kennel. (Then again, you might not ... but I'm going to tell you anyway!) Well, I met my current family of humans when they visited the Buddy Dog Humane Society to look for a new canine companion. My original human family decided to move away and couldn't take me along with them, so they brought me to Buddy Dog so that I could find some other humans to keep me company. Before my current humans came along, another family of humans took me from Buddy Dog but brought me back the next day. They said I was chasing their cat, but they didn't realize that I just wanted to play! (I think they just didn't realize how much fun we Dalmatians are, and expected a "Disney-like" canine.) But my current humans came along, brought me home and have been great companions for me. They even took me to school at a place called Best Friends, which was pretty fun. I graduated from something called "Basic Manners" - I wonder if that means I have to sip my water with my dew claw extended!
My alpha-human is named Groovie - you might have visited his website before coming here. He's pretty cool for a
human-type. He does have an annoying habit of bothering me when I am enjoying some peace and quiet, as you can
tell from this picture. I think I'm going to have talk with him about this. Since I am a Dalmatian, I am a
curious canine by nature. He doesn't seem to understand that I just have to investigate everything very thoroughly.
All you fellow canines know that any good investigation involves taking something away to see how it tastes! He just
has to come and take it away from me every time. For some reason, they also will
not let me chase away all of the cats, squirrels and rabbits that invade my
territory when I am inside. Oh well, my human family is fun to be around anyway. They take me
for walks, play ball with me (those little yellow fuzzy balls that they hit with something called a racket are
so much fun), and will always pet me when I'm around them. I guess I can't ask for more than that!
I hope you enjoy your visit here, even if you are just passing through looking for some information. Murphy tried to have some useful information and I have tried to maintain that tradition as well as adding my own spot of personality. (I try not to just see things as black and white! Sorry, more Dalmatian humor!)
Murphy had set up a photo gallery for herself. Please check it out! I'll be adding a few pictures of myself that my humans have taken of me since I adopted them. I will also be combing through the archival information that Murphy left behind and adding more pictures of her if I find any real cute ones.
If you are curious, I also have a page to list what is new here in the Kennel.
Check out some of my favorite links. There's not too many right now, but I'm still working on it!
